The Association for Psychological Therapies is a leading provider of training in motivational interviewing. Originally aimed mainly at helping substance misuse, motivational interviewing targets the ability to sense 'where the patient is at' and to respond effectively. For this reason it represents fundamental clinical skills which are important to know about and to master. All of the training is accredited by APT and delegates receive the relevant level of APT’s accreditation on completing the course(s) as well as APT's downloadable resources.
A 3-day course.
Based on Miller and Rollnick's latest book, this course describes an organized way of helping people to recognize their problems and to do something about them. Principally it addresses behavior about which the client has mixed feelings: drinking and substance misuse for example, but a surprising array of common mental and physical health problems as well. Issues from taking psychoactive medication through to eating more healthily can all be addressed using motivational interviewing.
Available to everybody.
This exam is available free of charge to those who attend the APT course Motivational Interviewing, and how to use it effectively, and for a fee to those who have attended similar training from another provider.
It is a web based exam with a high pass mark of 85% and gains you Level 2 in APT accreditation of Motivational Interviewing. If you don't pass first time you can review the course material and sit it again.
A 3-day course.
This is a course for people who have at least 6 months practice subsequent to receiving Level 3 APT-Accreditation (often much more). In lectures, the masterclass provides more depth on some of the topics in the Essentials course but is mainly focused on developing skill, based around the following components: listening to and making case presentations, watching video demos by others, role-play/real-play where you interview others and they interview you, and establishing a stable system for support and development for yourself in this area post course. The result is that you enhance your skill and technique, not just your knowledge. Successful completion also gains you APT's Level 4 accreditation in the subject.
